RESPONSIBILITY FOR DECLARING THE BALL "READY-FOR-PLAY" WHEN A RESTART WHISTLE IS REQUIRED- TRAIL OFFICIAL every kickoff drop ball goal kick LEAD OFFICIAL corner kick every free kick PKs SITUATION- There is a FREE kick ANYWHERE on the field, but we have a stoppage of play for any reason(injury, caution, red card, lightning, grenade, a ref has to go get his hat), which official is responsible to whistle the restart??? LEAD LEAD LEAD LEAD LEAD OFFICIAL not rocket science. I am done for today. |

Many of us are still getting some restart whistles wrong. That is, who has the responsibility to declare the ball "READY FOR PLAY", the trail or lead official. The TRAIL referee has the whistle only for all kickoffs, goal kicks, and drop balls. The LEAD referee has the whistle for corner kicks, penalty kicks, and ALL OTHER FREE KICKS. On free kicks is when most mistakes happen. If there is a free kick, and there was some stoppage where a whistle is now required for a restart, it's the lead official's whistle. It does not matter where on the field the free kick is. For example, there was a foul near the corner flag, and the defense has the free kick coming out. there was a card or injury so we now need a whistle to restart. The lead official way up the field has the whistle, not the trail referee standing next to the ball for the free kick! Let's be on the same page please!
