Some reminders about important mechanics, little things which can prevent big mistakes.

THROW-INS
Long throws, flip throws, any throw ins.... don't turn your head, you are responsible on your touchline whether the throw is legal. Be in a position where you open yourself up to see the throw-in and the subsequent play. Especially a long throw into the box. Almost like a corner kick, get to a position where you can see the throw and where the throw ends up(in the penalty area) .

ALL FREE KICKS-
don't turn your back on the ball, don't get the ball moved on you, watch for any 'legal deception', i.e. the ball was touched and the kick was actually taken already.
As the trail official, be prepared to set the wall back 10 yards WHEN ASKED, and then let EVERYONE know there will be a whistle to re-start(by the lead official).
And manage accordingly any 'smart-ass' players playing dumb and standing 3 yards in front of a free kick. Blatant encroachment used to delay the game and prevent the kicking team from taking a kick should result in a yellow card for the offending player.
And PLEASE, do NOT march off 10 yards. Use your experience to set the wall while always facing the ball.

SUBSTITUTIONS- Be aware if subs have reported and are waiting to come in. Either official can notice this and give a quick double whistle to signal subs. and then the appropriate ref whistles when ready.

POSITIONING- If your standard mechanic in the 2-man system is to have your back to your partner, or to be facing your touchline from say 5-10 yards away on the field, you are incorrect. Get back to the touchline when necessary to be accurate with your in/out calls, and face your partner.
YOU ARE NOT RUNNING A MIDDLE IN THE 3-MAN SYSTEM.

SIGNALS- BE CLEAR AND ACCURATE AND QUICK. DON'T BE TENTATIVE. All characteristics of a strong official. It's done for your partner, the players, coaches, and scorer's table.
and we are NOT conducting a RULES CLINIC. Make the call and move on with MINIMAL or no explanation.
"Hold" simultaneously with a clear signal after the whistle.
"OFF" simultaneously with a clear signal after the whistle.
If necessary, that should be it.
