On Saturday I was approached by a coach who was seeking clarification on a ruling by one of our members in a previous match. In this varsity match the referee did not allow substitution of a cautioned player when that player left the field. The referee ruled that the cautioned player (yellow card) could be replaced only upon the next legal substitution. This is incorrect. Rule 3-3-2c and 12-8-1. A cautioned player shall leave the field and may be replaced. The cautioned player may not re-enter until the next legal substitution opportunity. In CIAC the cautioned player must remain out of the game for 10 minutes. If the team elects to play shorthanded for some period of time and the game is resumed, the cautioned player cannot be replaced until the next legal substitution opportunity. Further, if the cautioned player is being replaced during a penalty kick situation (clock also stopped), the substitute may not take the penalty kick. A cautioned player can be replaced immediately during this dead-ball situation while the clock is stopped to administer the caution just as an injured player would be. I admit that the wording of this rule can be confusing. |
