Kieth-
Advantage calls are always appropriate in Soccer at the varsity level... when they are appropriate.
Appropriate is in the eyes of the beholder...and has some dependancy on today's game and our control thereof.

The situation that you describe is a wonderful opportunity in which to "wait a beat" before blowing the whistle and call "advantage" or "play on" when you see what happens on the field.

The player that was fouled is often not the best judge of circumstances as they pull the turf out of their mouth and dial down the bell ringing in their ear while assessing whether their knee still flexes.

Advantage calls should often cause a brief moment of reflection by the referee. It sounds as though you have thought about it and decided that you got this one right. Without being there, none of us can disagree. It sounds like a great advantage call to me. If the ball had hit the back of the net, then nobody would be complaining...

We do need to remember to cancel the advantage call and award the DFK when an advantage does not develop....AND recognize that if the foul was at the level of "reckless" (Yellow card) or "excessive force"/"serious foul play"/"risking injury to an opponent" (red card)then we should remember the fouling player's number and issue the card at the next stoppage.

If the coach gave you grief then perhaps I would give another nanosecond of reflection to the matter. You did fine...think about it, get over it and play on,
Frank

I am curious to see what some of my fellow officials would do in the following situation.

During a G Var Scrim, both teams playing good high level soccer, mid 2nd half score 0 - 0, both teams having developed scoring opportunities throughout the game but no success yet. Striker on the "white" team attacks down the right touchline into the corner, she is strongly defended by the "blue" defender. "White" striker makes a good move, opens space, and gets an excellent cross off. The "blue" defender immediately fouls her, taking her to the ground. A quick look by me shows the cross headed directly across the box with 2 "white" strikers crashing toward goal. My decission: No whistle, apply Advantage and let the cross go through. The "white" fouled player is upset at no whistle.

The cross does not develop a score but a good shot was taken which was saved by the blue keeper.

Did I make a good decision or should I have called the foul?
